In my opinion...

Engelbert Schmid...

All Engelbert's horns
are marked by this
hand-engraved
logo.

...makes the best horns in the world.

This photo shows some detail of the logo engraving. A lovely piece of work.

I am very proud to own two horns made by Engelbert Schmid.

.

A yellow brass handhorn (the design of which is based on a horn by Ignaz Lorenz, of Linz).
I have crooks in C alto, Bb alto, A, G, F, Eb, D, Db and C.
I also have two sizes of coupler and two different tuning slides. I use this horn for all baroque and classical repertoire.
It's by far he best handhorn I have ever tried.

An unlacquered gold-brass double horn with a stopping valve. This is the best modern horn I have ever played on. I feel very fortunate to own it. I have two different screw-fitting bells for this instrument. One is described as "wide", is of relatively thick metal and has a hand-engraved nickel-silver garland (this is the one which has been decorated). The other is described as "medium", is of thinner brass, has no garland and thus is very lightweight. Each of these bells gives the horn a completely different blowing feel and a rather different sound. I use the lightweight bell for chamber music and the bigger one for everything else.

The valves on Schmid horns are the lightest,
fastest, most long-lasting and best valves
to be found on any brass instrument, anywhere.
